Genetics: Research shows that genetics can influence appetite regulation, metabolic

rate, satiety signaling, and food reward sensitivity. Some individuals are biologically

predisposed to stronger hunger signaling.

Insulin Resistance: When the body becomes resistant to insulin, blood sugar

regulation becomes impaired. This can increase hunger, cravings, and energy

fluctuations.

Hormonal Conditions: Conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can

significantly affect metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and appetite regulation.

Chronic Stress: Stress hormones such as cortisol can increase cravings for calorie-

dense foods, particularly foods high in sugar and fat.

 Poor Sleep: Sleep deprivation profoundly affects appetite hormones. Studies show

that inadequate sleep increases ghrelin and decreases leptin, which can intensify

hunger and cravings.

Emotional Eating Patterns: Food is deeply connected to comfort, reward, celebration,

stress relief, and emotional regulation. For many individuals, emotional associations

with food begin early in life.

Highly Processed Foods: Ultra-processed foods are specifically engineered to

maximize palatability. They stimulate reward pathways in the brain in ways whole foods

often do not.


A landmark study by Kevin D. Hall and colleagues, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, found that ultra-processed diets led to significantly greater calorie intake and weight gain than minimally processed diets, even when nutrients were matched.


That finding matters because it reinforces something many patients already feel intuitively:


Certain foods make it harder to stop eating.


Not because people are weak.

Because biology is being powerfully stimulated.


The Role of Modern Food Environments


We also cannot discuss food noise without discussing the environment people are trying to navigate.


Our modern food environment is extraordinarily stimulating.

The STEP-1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrated that

Similarly, research by Ania M. Jastreboff and colleagues studying tirzepatide showed significant weight reduction and improvements in appetite regulation among participants with obesity.

However, it is important to emphasize something clearly:


These medications are tools. They are not magic.


They work best when paired with broader lifestyle changes, nutritional support, stress

management, sleep optimization, and long-term behavioural strategies.
